On Sunday 3rd October, Harwich Angling Club Match Team travelled to Prestons Lake, Pebmarsh to fish the fourth in the series of six Essex Inter Club League - Division 1 matches for the 2010/2011 season.
On a rainy, dull and overcast day with some gusty winds, and the lake looking in very good condition, the correct tactics, bait and presentation would be vital in this 60 peg all fish count match.
Harwich Angling Club put out their strongest team for this lake fixture, but it was going to be a tough challenge for all the teams as this was to be a random peg match.
At the final whistle with every angler putting fish in their nets, every team awaited the results with interest as only 13 points separate the top 6 league places.
When all the match results came in, it turned out to be a very close match with only 15.5 points separating the top 5 teams and a total of over 485lbs of fish caught.
It was another good result for Harwich Angling Club finishing in third place, behind Maldon AS and CAPS 'A' teams who again tied for first place, achieving a team total of 37 points due to everyone in the team picking up valuable points.
It was mainly due to two of the squad. Top local match anglers Paul Chambers (A section permanent peg 1) and John Shepard (B section permanent peg 11) both mastered the conditions perfectly, with Paul weighing in with a superb 41lbs 7ozs finishing first in his section, picking up 10 points and achieving a great 2nd place overall in the match and John weighing in 13lbs 9ozs also finishing first in his section, picking up 10 points and coming in 9th place overall in the match.
This result has moved Harwich Angling Club up into third place in the league with 27 points just 6.5 points behind the top team Maldon AS.
The other members of the squad were Graeme Edgar (C section perm peg 23) with 6lbs 10ozs getting 8 points, John Pettitt (F section perm peg 51) with 7lbs 1oz getting 6 points , Dave Brown (E section perm peg 43) with 1lbs 0ozs getting 2 points and Alan Luetchford (D section perm peg 32) with 2lbs 1oz getting 1 point.
With only two more Essex Inter Club League matches remaining this season, the next match being hosted by Chelmsford AA on their stretches of the River Chelmer on the Sunday 7th November 2010, Harwich Angling Club will be looking to further improve their current league position.
The Essex Inter Club League (www.essexinterclub.co.uk) is becoming a very popular league for clubs in and around this part of Essex and there is a possibility that next year the league could be expanded to cater for these interested clubs. Please visit the web site for details.
