E.I.C.L MATCH 5

On Sunday 7th November 2010 Harwich Angling Club travelled to the River Chelmer at Black Bridge, Paper Mill and Hoe Mill, to fish the fifth in the series of six Essex Inter Club League - Division 1 matches for the 2010/2011 season.

On a chilly, bright and sunny day , with occasional cloud cover, with the river having a steady flow and little colour, the correct presentation along with bait and tactics would be crucial in this random 60 peg match.

Harwich Angling Club put out their strongest team available for this river fixture, but it was going to be a hard challenge for all the teams due to the drop in temperature overnight.

At the final whistle it proved to be a low weight match with some anglers not even catching any fish All the teams awaited the results with interest in what is turning out to be the closest finish in the league for some years.

When all the match results came in, it turned out to be a very close match with only 8 points separating the top 5 teams and a total of only 95lbs of fish caught.

Although Harwich Angling Club achieved a team total of 39 points, due to everyone in the team picking up valuable points, it was only enough to get the fifth place spot. The best performances from the Harwich squad were from top local match anglers Paul Chambers, John Shepard and Bob Oakley.

Fishing the Hoe Mill section on peg F3, Paul Chambers weighed in with 2lbs 3ozs finishing first in his section, picking up 10 points. Fishing the Black Bridge section both Bob Oakley on peg A9 weighing in with 1lbs 1ozs and John Shepard on peg B2 weighing in with 4lbs 7ozs each picked up 8 points. John Shepard also came in a great 4th place overall in the match with Paul Chambers moving up into the top 10 in the Individual Points League with his good result.

This result has maintained Harwich Angling Clubs third place in the league with 33 points.

The other members of the squad were Graeme Edgar (Paper Mill section peg D1) with 1lbs 3ozs getting 7 points, Dave Brown (Paper Mill section peg C7) with 0lbs 10ozs getting 3 points and Laurie Snell (Hoe Mill section peg E7) with 0lbs 7ozs getting 3 points.

With the next and last match in this series of Essex Inter Club League matches for 2010/2011 season being hosted by Maldon AS on their stretches of the Canal on the Sunday 9th January 2011, Harwich Angling Club will be looking to maintain their current league position but have an outside chance of improving.
